Concerned About Your
Senior Dog's Wellbeing & Comfort?

The hardest part about loving a dog is that they will only break your heart once.

And as a fellow dog owner, I think you would agree.

Our dogs are a source of joy, love, and truthful companionship for us …

They are there for us even when nobody else is …

Always showering love onto us – and trying their best to fill our lives with fun and happy memories.

Only we dog owners can understand how wonderful selfless bundles of joy these beings are.

But you know what hurts my soul and keeps me up at night?

Watching these precious companions struggle in their senior years …

Lose all their shine, and energy …

And deal with all the pain alone.

And it hurts even more to see them living in a fairly uncomfortable state and still doing their best to please us (their beloved owners) 🥹.

But –

Is there something you can do to make things more comfortable for your senior dog and bring some joy and energy back into their lives?

Fortunately, yes!

And here is why you absolutely should –

Aging Hits Dogs Hard …
But It Doesn't Have to Be This Way

Getting older can cause A LOT of problems for any being’s body, and dogs are no different.

In fact, it looks like dogs have it worse.

As they age –

Their energy levels go down, and they slowly lose their playfulness …

Their immune system becomes compromised …

They can develop some common chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritic joint disease …

And what was once a boundless source of energy now whimpers after trying to jump onto the couch.

It hurts your soul when you remember how they once did it with such ease. 😕 And have you noticed how their pace changes?

Seniors tend to take it a bit slower, finding some activities more challenging.

But you know what pulls at the heartstrings the most.

The cognitive changes.

From separation anxiety to a touch of dementia, it can be tough for both them and us.

And when we have to leave them alone – that look they give, it’s like they’re telling us, “Hey, don’t go!” 😢

It’s also common they start losing eyesight and hearing and all this makes them more anxious, depressed and confused.

So they might become more unpredictable and start behaving strangely.

I know how it feels – sometimes handling a senior dog gets quite frustrating because of all this.

But it doesn’t have to be this way!

See …

Your senior dog still has the heart of an active canine athlete inside …

But the body and mind won’t follow on their own.

You’ll want to step in with extra attention, care, and maybe a few adjustments to their environment. 😉

This can give your dog immense relief and help them go back to being their old self.

Yes!

It’s not all doom & gloom.

With a little exercise, conditioning know-how, and some love …

You can easily level up your dog’s energy levels, reduce their discomfort, and stimulate them mentally and physically …

So they can live a more joyful, active and pain-free senior life.

By incorporating proprioceptive exercises and maintaining a steady activity level, not only do they stay physically engaged, but their minds remain sharp and active.

You might even catch them rediscovering their inner puppy-like enthusiasm. 🥰

As a result, your dog will keep a sparkle in their eyes, and you will get to enjoy quality time with them for longer.

The Success Stories of Trainers and Competitors
Speak for Themselves

I started working with Jana almost 3 years ago and ever since, she has been an indispensable part of our training plan. She is always there for us – for conditioning plan and workout (her tips on how to get a specific move from your dog are priceless) or regular preventive check ups and massages.

Regardless of what your dogs needs are, Jana always adapts to their individual needs. She is kind and with an amazing feeling and desire to help dogs to be in best shape possible. She gives her heart into every single one of her animal clients and treats them as they were her own. I’m grateful I have a chance to work with such a person as Jana is. And seeing how my dogs adores her, I’m quite certain they feel the same. Thank you Jana!

Lea Komat – Slovenia
Agility competitor and instructor, member of Slovenian national team since 2016
Perfect class for building balance and strength for my dogs, super easy to understand and very good feedback!
Lisa Frick – Austria
International dog trainer and handler – 4 times world champion, vice European champion

Dogs give their best every time they step on the training/competition field and doing my best to keep them healthy and physically prepared for all the challenges, is something I owe them as the owner and handler. And just because of that, Jana’s conditioning classes are a huge part of our training and warming up/cooling down routine.

All exercises are designed in a way to make it as safe for the dog as possible, she puts a lot of attention to details (which is REALLY important when we come to conditioning) and on top of that, Jana knows really well how to adapt to every individual dog and give them what they need the most (when you have breeds that are not really “social butterflies”, working with someone who understands dog’s character is really important).

So thank you Jana for your great classes and for all the “live” training and check-ups! It means a lot to me, to have someone so skilled watching over my dogs!

FUNdamentals Conditioning course is a very interesting and wonderful courses.

I learned many useful exercises for my dogs. I liked the very detailed and understandable explanation of each exercise, a lot of attention is given to the safe execution of exercises.

My dogs perform exercises every week during our walks, at home, before training. And they do theirs with pleasure!

Thousands Of Senior Dogs Are Finding More Joy In Their Senior Years
- Will Yours Be Next?

The 3-Part Game Plan
To Prolong Your Dog's Fun Lifestyle And Make Sure They Age Smoothly

Here's exactly how you'll do it:

Step 1

Set Good Foundations:

With 5-minute Skill Time lessons, you will develop understanding, confidence, and establish a strong foundation.

You will work on things like:

  • How to activate muscles in the correct pattern
  • How to move
  • How to transfer weight
  • How to keep balance
  • How to react to certain moves
  • How to use the gear

You will want to polish the isolated exercises first before moving on to the workouts.

Step 2

Proceed to Workout Weeks and Start Working Out:

Only once you’ve built a solid foundation layer, and your dog understands the criteria, you can add more challenges and incorporate exercises into your session to create a circuit and start working out.

There are 6 weeks of done-for-you guided workout plans waiting for you.

Each week comprises 3 combined full-body workouts suitable for senior and compromised dogs and 2 training opportunities to focus on your foundational exercise skills. Workouts include suggestions on repetitions for basic, intermediate, and advanced levels of difficulty, allowing you to adjust the challenge to your preference.

You have the flexibility to work at your own pace, with the goal of completing 5 training sessions lasting 5 to 10 minutes each per week.

Step 3

Progress:

The final step is crucial to prevent your dog’s progress from plateauing and to help them continue to gain strength.

Once your dog has built a solid foundation and is ready, you can gradually increase the load and level of difficulty of the exercises to challenge them at a new, yet reasonable, level.

Each exercise is accompanied by tips on how to progress. Therefore, once you complete the initial round of Fundamentals, you can revisit the course and redo it with exercises of increased difficulty, enabling you to further advance and progress.

Proprioceptive abilities decrease with age, thus simple exercises that improve proprioception are highly recommended.

1Essential Facts of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine in Companion Animals (Bockstahler et al, 2019)

Dogs experience a decline in aerobic capacity with age, just as humans do. This capacity can be improved by appropriate strengthening and balance exercise interventions.

2Assessment and Management of Declining Physical Function in Aging Dogs, (McKenzie and Chen, 2022)

Increased physical activity can be associated with lower (i.e., better) scores on a cognitive dysfunction

»FUNdamentals is not suitable only for young dogs in sport, but also to keep retired dogs as fit as possible so they can follow the youngsters with daily activities! Just like with human atheletes, also with dogs the major preparation starts away from the main sport.

Dogs4Motion offers the whole package; Off the competition season my dogs besides daily hikes mostly do dog fitness and hydrotherapy to stay in shape as only strong and fit dogs will be able to compete in the highest level injury free.

Combined with regular physiotherapy I strongly believe this is the way to get dogs best! All my dogs are happy to be a part of Dogs4Motion team!«

I Created this Course with Senior Dogs in Mind: Including Yours!

Hi, my name is Jana Gams …

I am a doctor of Veterinary Medicine, a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner & the founder of Dogs4motion.

Over the years I have worked with countless dogs on a daily basis – from athletes to puppies, to oldies.

And not only have I worked with dogs as a rehab practitioner but have also lived and worked with them as a trainer myself.

I have been an active trainer and competitor in several dog sports with my own dogs for the past 19 years!

YouTube player

Featured Video: I Work with Many Canine Athletes on a Daily Basis as the Founder of the Dogs4motion, Veterinary Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Center in Slovenia.

That being said, one of the most rewarding parts of it all is giving my older dogs a good quality of life and spending their retirement years pampering them. After all, they deserve it the most!

My journey and experience has helped me better understand a dog’s needs and how much they are capable of with the right mental and physical care.

I enjoy using my knowledge to help people set their dogs up for success in their older years too – showing you just how much life your oldies have in them if their mind and body is well taken care of.

Watching Your Dog Slow Down: I Know It Is Painful

It is hard to see their physical abilities decline when you still view them as that capable, active, young dog.

Sometimes our dogs don’t even recognise their age yet either, making it hard for them to slow down when they are convinced they can still take on the world.

But, age is a beautiful thing too. It doesn’t have to be about:

Painfully watching your dog’s physical abilities deteriorate …

Restricting their activity levels against their will …

Feeling like you’re neglecting them.

You can make it about fulfilling your older dog’s golden years, savoring the bond you have, and embracing the harmony and unity you have cultivated over the years.

Old age comes with its challenges, but it can also bring many rewarding moments.

I would know, I have been there with my first dog Tery. My dog Brie is now in her senior years and Genie herself is also steadily approaching them. And despite the occasional hardships, I adore senior dogs and all their quirks.

My Tery reached the beautiful age of 16 years and it was not always easy.

The hardest part for me will always be knowing that our dog’s lives are absolutely too short.

BUT that does not mean that we cannot make the most of it.

Your dog’s older years do not have to be debilitating!

Create The Rewarding Moments Yourself

I found that consistent low-impact activity, conditioning exercises, and mental challenges can make a significant difference for both you and your senior dog.

These small investments can help your dog stay sharp, physically capable and full of life, even as they age.

Tery enjoyed his old age to the fullest, and I intend to ensure the same for my Brie, Genie and all my other dogs as they grow older, by investing my time and energy into taking care of their mental and physical well-being.

I am sure my dogs will never go without these activities when they get older, because I see the changes I can make. When it is so simple to raise my dog’s quality of life and wellbeing you can be sure I will never skip it!

And you can make the same positive impact with your dog and the program I have set up for you in just 5-10 short minutes a day!

With my help and just a little bit of your time you’ll be able to strengthen your dog’s proprioception, balance, their muscle strength, and their range of motion – which are all the things that start to deteriorate first as your dog ages.

I also find that conditioning work for older dogs can help them find and maintain that youthful spark. My dogs love this work and I can see that puppy-like enthusiasm light up again with the small, attainable, and fun challenges that come with conditioning and proprioceptive work.

This course will also give you the unique opportunity to spend time having fun with your dog every day, doing what they love, but also keeping them happy and healthy.

Most importantly, you will get to make the most of your time together!

How Is This Senior-Specific Course Different from the general FUNdamentals Canine Conditioning Course?

VS

As the name implies, FUNdamentals for Seniors has been designed with senior companions, their needs, and problems in mind.

The main differences are in load management – basic, intermediate, and advanced levels are adapted to fit senior dogs.

Exercises are simpler, require lower objects, and can be performed at a slower pace.

There are more descriptions and explanations of the exercises themselves, including how to make adjustments and which dogs they are suitable for – safe as a self-study program!

The course structure is similar to FUNdamentals (exercises, workouts, resting days, intermediate sessions).

You’ll also find valuable senior-specific knowledge inside, including information on what happens in the body adapted to the activity level, etc.

If you have previously enrolled into the FUNdamentals course, I strongly suggest you study this senior-specific course as well (remember, you’re backed up by a full satisfaction guarantee, so take a peek without any risk).

If you have a healthy adult dog, I’d suggest taking the general FUNdamentals course first.

And if you have a puppy, I’d recommend you join the Fundamentals for Puppies course.

And, of course, if you have a senior dog, or a dog who is facing underlying physical weaknesses, don’t hesitate for one second and enroll now.

Have a Taste

Let me show you one of the exercises that you can find in this course:
A full video tutorial on Slalom walking!

YouTube player

Watch this video and discover everything about Slalom walking:

  • How it challenges dynamic balance, improves footwork, and fosters better neuromotor abilities in motion
  • How it enhances your dog’s proprioception
  • How it engages the core and boosts strength in both the front and rear limb muscles
  • Its benefits for improving lateral spine flexion and lengthening the back muscles and side abdominal wall
  • Get valuable tips on how to perform it effectively

Slalom walking is truly a perfect exercise to improve your dog’s dynamic balance and enhance their proprioception. We LOVE it – what about you? ❤️

There are 20 detailed exercises just like this inside the Skill Room, which you get as a special BONUS when you enroll in our online course. 💪

Minimal Equipment Needed

You can always just use some stuff from house inventory!

Platforms

Two non-slippery platforms.
You can use two lower planks or targets that your dog can comfortably step on or target with either their front or hind paws.

It can be a simple do-it-yourself wooden platform or foam pad, or you can always use some items from your household inventory.

Set of bars

A set of cavaletti cones and bars or any kind of poles from your home inventory (such as brooms, rakes, hiking poles, etc.) can be used.

A non-slip surface

If you don’t have a non-slip floor, I would advise you to use a mat or carpet that you can place in the room where you normally train (such as a yoga mat, carpet, or foam puzzles that you can clip together).

Ideal For Senior Dogs Of Any Age And Compromised Dogs

This course is suitable for senior dogs with no maximum age limit.

A dog is considered as old from 7.5 years for giant breeds and 11.5 years for small breeds.

You’ll start with the basics and progress gradually.

This was absolutely super online course. There were very good exercises and really good theory part. I am really happy that I entered my dogs to Fundamentals online course. Jana’s feedback for all the videos was very thorough.

I am really satisfied how my dogs looked after the course and how much better was their coordination.

A course with this much knowledge and depth regarding senior dog fitness has never before been seen in such a simple, and easy to follow, ready-to-use format!

Does this Suit me?

The primary distinction among these courses lies in the age (and health condition) of the dogs they are intended for. Despite this difference, all these courses are comprehensive and meticulously crafted to achieve the desired strengthening outcome. Here are the distinctive features of each course:

FUNdamentals for Puppies:

  • Designed for puppies to learn basic exercises from scratch.
  • Emphasizes accuracy of exercise execution, teaching methods, and behavior proving and refining
  • Focuses more on learning isolated exercises and proprioception rather than strengthening.
  • Course structure: Contains only exercises.

FUNdamentals:

  • Intended for healthy, active dogs.
  • Covers exercises for all parts of the body and includes various training aspects.
  • Slightly more advanced and challenging compared to FUNdamentals for Puppies.
  • Course structure: Includes exercises, mobility exercises, 6 weeks of structured workouts, ideas for resting days, and suggestions for short training sessions in between.

FUNdamentals for Seniors:

  • Tailored for seniors and compromised dogs.
  • Exercises are adapted to different levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced.
  • Simplified exercises that require lower objects and can be performed at a slower pace.
  • Provides detailed descriptions and explanations of exercises, including adjustments and suitability for different dogs (safe for self-study).
  • Course structure similar to FUNdamentals, with exercises, 6 weeks of done-for-you workouts, resting days, and intermediate sessions.
  • Includes a senior-specific section covering physiological changes in the body and activities adapted to the dog’s activity level.

There’s a crossover of some exercises between FUNdamentals and FUNdamentals for Seniors because foundations are foundations!

In exact numbers: 13 exercises from the Skill Room are overlapping, and 6 exercises are new. However, even with the exercises that are overlapping, the setup and practice recommendations are given with senior/compromised dogs in mind. This means you get to learn much more about possible setup adaptations and contraindications, as in the FUNdamentals. The structured workouts (18 of them) are completely new.

The program is specially designed to suit senior and compromised dogs’ needs. Any dog young in spirit who can move independently can join.

Each exercise contains information for which dogs it is suitable and how to adapt it in case the dog has a certain problem.

Also, the workouts are divided into three difficulty categories – basic/intermediate/advanced and this basic is easy, and also suitable for dogs that have significant physical weaknesses.

This course is ideal for senior and compromised dogs. Here’s a general guideline of when the dog is considered old:

  • Small breeds (up to 10 kg): 11.5 years
  • Medium-sized breeds (up to 25 kg): 10 years
  • Large breeds (up to 45 kg): 9 years
  • Giant breeds (over 45 kg): 7.5 years

1Essential Facts of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine in Companion Animals (Bockstahler et al, 2019)

It is important that you follow the recommendations on how to adapt exercises for a certain health condition. We explain everything within the course.

Progress at your own pace to master the exercises and then proceed to workout weeks and start working out.

Yes, we are sure. We have plenty of proof to back it up. Not just Border Collies. From Poodles to German Shepherds. You name it. All breeds are welcome here. We love all of them. Dog fitness even help breeds with longer backs.

The program is also suitable for dogs with long spines. You will help them develop core strength which is super important for them. Using low equipment/platforms does the trick and the fact that we are working with the dog in front of us!
This program is much more effective with food. It requires precision and repetition in exercises that are difficult to achieve with a toy reward.

Does your dog eat daily meals? If so, you can switch from using a bowl to using the food as a training reward.

Health and safety concerns

Yes. The program is made by Jana Gams, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. It is also recommended by other experts and backed up by science.

No special equipment is required! You can always use some stuff from your house inventory!

A simple do-it-yourself platform or foam pad and a few objects your dog can circle around will suffice.

It is good to have some basic fitness equipment, like a set of bars for the cavaletti exercises. Or more, if you want to add in some difficulty.

If you want to buy anything, a simple balance mat will do, and for the rest, you can improvise.

No, you do not.

You and your dog can be complete beginners and you will still be able to follow the course. You will discover the foundations to start with canine conditioning safely and effectively. If your dog is used to reward-based training (like taking food from your hand) you are good to go! You and your dog will learn everything through the course. You will start with true basics and continue to build strong foundations.

If you are an experienced handler (or have an experienced dog), relax. This course will challenge you and keep you both occupied as well.

Yes! You will be able to strengthen your dog’s whole body equally and in the right way. You will be guided with easy-to-follow step-by-step explanations and videos and 6 weeks of done-for-you training plans.

Yes! For example, when dealing with issues like:

  • Osteoarthritis (in any of their joints – elbows, knees, hips, hocks, etc)
  • Hip/elbow dysplasia.
  • After TPLO (and other CCL surgical interventions).
  • L7/S1 problems.
  • Lower back issues (spondylosis, IVDD).
  • Tight hip flexors.
  • Mild Heart conditions.
  • Other specific health problems.
  • Past injuries.

To improve the support to osteoarthritic joints, it’s essential to strengthen the musculature around them. At the same time, you should focus on strengthening the core. This will allow your dog to move with improved balance and efficiency.

We also have quite some dogs with lower back issues, and chronic joint problems who joined the course and benefitted from it greatly.

There are also guidelines throughout the class for dogs with hip/elbow dysplasia, or certain other conditions, to make the exercises as safe as possible.

The instructor Jana Gams is a doctor of veterinary medicine and qualified in canine rehabilitation. You will be able to apply the easiest variation of each exercise, depending on the case. You will discover how to adapt each exercise for the best strengthening outcome. You will learn how to choose the right setup in order not to overload this part of the body.

You can also request Jana Gams’s feedback to make sure you’re doing exercises the right way. We will design tailored rehabilitation plans to help your dog rebuild adequate muscle strength. It is important that you adapt them to your dog’s conditions and current abilities. If you believe your case is different, don’t hesitate to contact us: info@dogs4motion.com!

This course is designed as a self-study program. Relax. For a small fee, you can upgrade and additionally purchase a 1-on-1 personal feedback  with Jana Gams!
